Why data center BIM is different

Bigger, faster and more repetitive than most building work.

Six public facts, each linked to its source, that explain why data center models need tools, not more clicking.

One design, many buildings

7 buildings

A planned Louisville, Kentucky campus includes seven data center buildings of about 219,534 sq ft each. When buildings share a design, every fix to the prototype has to reach every copy.

Fix it once in the tool, not seven times in the models.

Density keeps jumping

Up to 142 kW

per rack for current AI systems such as NVIDIA GB300 NVL72. Air cooling becomes impractical above about 50 kW per rack.

Content built for 10 kW air-cooled halls doesn't fit.

Capacity is sold before it's built

80.4% preleased

of the 7,481 MW under construction in primary North American markets in the first half of 2026. CBRE also notes that delays from converting to liquid cooling can extend beyond six months.

Late design changes cost time nobody has.

Prefab moves work off site

25 electrical rooms

built on 2 MW skids by DPR Construction, saving just under 15,000 onsite electrician hours (about $1.8M), as the contractor reports.

Every skid and spool needs sheets, numbers and a bill of materials.

Handover is in the contract

COBie V3

COBie is required project by project, through the contract. When it is, every asset needs the owner's fields filled in before turnover.

If Revit asset tags don't match the owner's register, someone re-types them.

Numbering is native. Owner schemes aren't.

Revit 2027

added rule-based numbering schemas that can apply to any element. What's left is owner ID schemes that span models, buildings and the DCIM system.

We use native features where they fit and build only what's missing.

What we automate

Twelve data center tasks a tool can do for your team.

Each one can start as a fixed-price pilot ($750–$1,500, an estimated 1–2 weeks) and grow into a full add-in or cloud job when it proves itself on your model.

TaskWhat the tool doesWho uses it
Rack rows & IDsPlaces racks by row and pod from a table, sets aisle direction, assigns IDs to your scheme (for example DH1-A-03), and flags spacing below the clearances you set.Architects, MEP designers, owners
ContainmentBuilds hot- or cold-aisle containment panels, doors and roofs from the rack rows, with a panel and door list.Designers, general contractors (GCs), containment installers
Power path & A/B feedsCompares your one-line equipment list with the model. Writes upstream IDs, voltage and feed (A or B) to each rack, RPP and PDU, flags orphans and mismatches, and colors views by path.Electrical engineers and contractors, commissioning agents
Load roll-upsAdds up rack kW per row, hall and feed, and compares the total with the design IT load you enter.Electrical engineers, owners
Air-side coolingPlaces, tags and schedules CRAH or fan-wall units using the unit count, capacity and redundancy rule (N+1, N+2) your mechanical engineer provides. Flags halls where the capacity entered is below the load entered.Mechanical engineers and contractors
Liquid coolingPlaces CDUs per rack group and lays out manifolds from your engineer's rules. Compares the CDU capacity value in the model with connected rack kW and flags differences for your engineer to review.Mechanical engineers, piping contractors
Tray & busway checksCalculates fill against the limits your engineer sets and flags overfill and separation issues for review.Electrical and low-voltage teams
Campus copiesCopies a prototype to each building, sets coordinates, re-IDs assets (for example B2-DH1-A-01) and rebuilds sheets per building.Owners, architects, GCs
Sheets per hallCreates views, sheets, tags and schedules for every data hall from a sheet list.Architects, engineers, BIM service providers
Prefab skids & spoolsAssembly and spool sheets with numbering, bill of materials, weight and QR codes, plus cut-list export. Weights come from the model and are for estimating and logistics only, not for rigging or lift plans.MEP trade contractors, prefab shops
Owner-standard QAChecks names, parameters and asset data against the owner's standard, in Revit or on IFC files with IDS, and scores each model.Owners, BIM managers

Engineering stays with your engineer of record

Our tools apply rules and values that your engineer of record provides. Their outputs are drafting and data aids, not engineering calculations, code-compliance reviews or sealed documents. Your licensed professionals review the results and remain responsible for the design.

We don't offer engineering design, calculations of record, code-compliance certification or stamped drawings. When a tool flags something, it's a flag for your engineer to review, not a judgment.

White space

Racks, rows and containment, placed and numbered by rule.

A data hall can hold hundreds of racks, and every density change moves them. Placing, numbering and checking them by hand is slow and easy to get wrong. A tool does it the same way every time, and does it again in seconds when the layout changes.

You give us
Hall boundary and column grid, rack types and kW, aisle widths, row and pod rules, your ID scheme, and the clearances you want checked (for example, a minimum aisle of 4 ft (1.2 m)).
You get
Racks placed by row with IDs, containment panels and doors, a rack schedule, a clearance report, and kW per row and hall.
Good for
Architects and MEP designers, owners comparing density options, preconstruction teams.
Price
Pilot $750–$1,500. Full add-in $4,000–$15,000.

Try rack numbering in the browser demo

One ID scheme, used everywhere

The example scheme from our demos. We use your owner's scheme if you have one.

IDWhat it means
DH1-A-03Data hall 1, row A, position 03
RPP-1A-01Remote power panel 01 in hall 1, path A
RPP-1B-01Its pair on path B
B2-DH1-A-01The same rack position in building 2 of a campus

Every rack carries both feeds: DH1-A-03 is fed from RPP-1A-01 on path A and RPP-1B-01 on path B.

Power

Every rack traced to its A and B sources.

The one-line diagram and the Revit model drift apart. Upstream IDs and feed data get re-typed by hand, and the errors show up at commissioning. A power path check compares the two and tells you exactly where they differ.

  • Reads your one-line equipment list from Excel or CSV
  • Matches each UPS, PDU, RPP, busway and rack in the model to the list
  • Writes upstream ID, voltage and path (A or B) to each element
  • Flags racks missing a feed, equipment with no upstream source, and IDs that appear in only one place
  • Colors views by path and builds a power path schedule
  • Adds up kW per row, hall and feed against the design IT load you enter

What you give us, what you get

Inputs
One-line equipment export (Excel or CSV), the Revit model, your naming convention.
Outputs
Updated parameters, a mismatch report with element IDs, power path schedules, A/B colored views.
Who uses it
Electrical engineers and contractors, commissioning agents, owners.
Price
Pilot $750–$1,500, an estimated 1–2 weeks.

Cooling

Air side and liquid cooling, from your engineer's rules.

AI racks are pushing halls from air to liquid cooling. That adds CDUs, secondary loops and rack manifolds, and many content libraries don't have them yet. Our tools place, tag, schedule and compare. They don't size equipment.

Air-side cooling

  • Places CRAH or fan-wall units along walls or galleries
  • Uses the unit count, capacity and redundancy rule (N+1, N+2) your mechanical engineer provides
  • Tags and schedules every unit, with a capacity-versus-load table per hall
  • Flags halls where the capacity entered is below the load entered

Liquid cooling

  • Places CDUs per rack group and lays out manifolds from your engineer's rules
  • Rolls up connected rack kW per CDU
  • Compares the CDU capacity value in the model with connected rack kW and flags differences for your engineer to review
  • Schedules CDUs, manifolds and the racks each one serves

Need the families first? The data center Revit kit (Extended tier) includes CDU, in-row CDU, manifold and rear-door heat exchanger families.

Campus & documentation

Fix the prototype once. Rebuild every building from it.

Campuses are often one prototype built many times. Re-creating each building by hand adds errors and days of setup. A campus tool copies the prototype and gives each building its own IDs, coordinates and sheets.

  • Copies a prototype model to each building on the campus
  • Sets shared coordinates and survey points per building
  • Re-IDs every asset with a building prefix, for example B2-DH1-A-01
  • Builds views, sheets, tags and schedules for every data hall from a sheet list
  • Reports what differs from the prototype, building by building

Runs as a C# add-in, or as a cloud batch job with Autodesk Platform Services (APS) when many models need the same change. Some APS usage is metered and billed by Autodesk to your account. We estimate usage before we build.

Campus replication: fix the prototype once, then rebuild IDs, sheets and schedules for every building.
Prefab

Skids, modules and spools with their sheets done for you.

Prefab moves electrical rooms, pipe racks and cooling skids into the shop. Each assembly still needs numbered sheets, a bill of materials and a way to track it from release to install. We generate them from the coordinated model.

  • Spool and assembly sheets with views, dimensions and numbering
  • Bill of materials and cut-list export (Excel or CSV) for the shop
  • Weight and QR code table per skid or module
  • Status parameters: designed, released, fabricated, installed

Handover

Asset data the owner can actually use.

Operators need rack, power and cooling data in their own systems on day one. We check the model's asset data, fill the gaps and export it in the formats the owner asked for.

Handover data flowModel data passes through automated checks, then exports to COBie, Autodesk Tandem, a DCIM import file and Power BI dashboards.Revit modelasset IDs + parametersAutomated checksmissing fields · duplicatesowner standard rulesCOBiespreadsheetAutodesk Tandemparameter mappingDCIM importCSV / APIPower BIdashboards
Model data passes through automated checks, then goes out as COBie, Autodesk Tandem mapping, a DCIM import file or Power BI dashboards.

COBie checks

Finds equipment with missing or duplicate COBie fields, then builds a fill list your team or ours completes from submittals.

Autodesk Tandem mapping

Maps your shared parameters to the owner's Autodesk Tandem facility setup, so asset data arrives where operations will look for it.

DCIM import files

Racks, positions, power connections and A/B feeds in the import format your DCIM vendor accepts, plus a report of mismatches between DCIM and the model.

Handover packages $2,500–$6,000. Larger integrations are quoted as a build ($4,000–$15,000). Handover service details

Owner standards

Built around your owner's standard.

Hyperscale and colocation owners publish strict rules for names, parameters and asset IDs. We turn those rules into checks that run in Revit, or nightly in the cloud, so problems show up the week they happen, not at turnover.

Example checks

  • Every rack has an asset ID that follows the scheme
  • No duplicate IDs across models or buildings
  • Every rack has both an A and a B source filled in
  • Scheduled equipment matches placed equipment
  • Required COBie and DCIM fields aren't empty
  • Family, type and view names follow the naming rules

Three ways to run the checks

  • In Revit: a button on your team's toolbar, with a report of failing elements by ID.
  • In the cloud: nightly runs across a project in Autodesk Forma (formerly Autodesk Construction Cloud), with results in Power BI.
  • On IFC files: owner rules written as IDS, so the same check works on any authoring tool's export.

Want a one-off check first?

We review your model by hand against your standard and data center rules, then gives you a fix list in priority order. $500 per model, an estimated 3 business days after access.

FAQ

Questions data center teams usually ask

Do you do engineering design or stamp drawings?

No. Our tools apply rules and values that your engineer of record provides. Their outputs are drafting and data aids, not engineering calculations, code-compliance reviews or sealed documents. Your licensed professionals review the results and remain responsible for the design.

Can you work to our owner's BIM standard?

Yes. That's the point. Send us the owner's naming, parameter and asset ID rules on the scoping call. We turn them into checks or tools that follow them, and we use your ID scheme instead of ours.

What software do we need?

Full Autodesk Revit or the AEC Collection. Revit LT doesn't run add-ins or Dynamo. Clash automation needs Navisworks® Manage. Shared dashboards need Power BI licenses for viewers. Cloud jobs may incur APS usage fees, billed by Autodesk to your account.

Can you work inside our cloud projects?

Yes, with access you grant. We can work in a project in Autodesk Forma (formerly Autodesk Construction Cloud). On the scoping call we agree who supplies the Revit seat and the Forma Design Collaboration entitlement for that work.

Our project restricts who can see files. Where is your team?

SS Technologies is a remote company. Before any file changes hands, we confirm in writing our registered entity and where your data would be accessed from, so you can check it against your contract (for example, US-persons-only access, background checks or CUI). If your project restricts who can see files, tell us on the scoping call.

Will you name our company or project?

No. Before any file changes hands, we sign an NDA: yours, after a quick review, or our mutual one. We never name your company or project publicly without written permission.

You're a new firm. Why start a data center project with you?

Fair question. We started in October 2026 and don't have client references yet. You don't have to take a big risk to find out: start with a $500 model health check, or a fixed-price pilot with a written acceptance test. If the pilot doesn't pass the written acceptance test on the agreed Revit version, we fix it at no charge. If it still doesn't pass within 10 business days of your test report, we refund the pilot fee in full. This doesn't cover changes to the scope, the test model or the Revit version after the scope is signed.

Which Revit versions do you support?

Revit 2024 through 2027, and 2023 on request. If your team runs several versions, we build and test an installer for each. Kit content is built in the oldest version you run, so it opens in every later one.
